-------------------------      Oct 3rd: Trends in IT Discussion Details -----------------------

Attendees: Sarang Sharma, Prabhat-788, Raj Kr, Atul, Shreyansh Gupta, Anmol Jha, Shivam Kumar

Discussed:

  • Trends in IT: 1. Data Science; 2.Cloud; 3.Security/ Privacy, 4.Process 5.ML/ AI 6. IOT - Robotics 7. Delivery of service -- Design Thinking (HCI) 8. Trusting System -- Blockchain - Identity management.
  • This is a very good summary of the major topics in technology that students need to know and can explore in deep via Internet / Google / Wikipedia / YouTube / Khan Academy
  • Wanted to break data into three areas - Data Science, Data Engineering and Data Analytics.
  • Most of Harvard/ MIT etc. courses are freely available online, you need to pay only if you want certification.

      By Raj Kumar

  • When it comes to stats, it’s a very wide subject so wanted to note that here is list of topics and enough to make solid statistics background and make career in analytics. 1. Types of distribution- normal, chi square, binomial, poisson, etc
  • Sampling techniques- random, stratified, clustered, multistaged, etc.
  • T test, hypothesis testing, Annova, normality test, chi square test and some important theorem like Central limit theorem, likelihood estimation etc.
  • Things are changing so fast hence one cannot rely on continues improvement but need to re-invent continuously. That said, the following areas are important to get into the practicality of the ML/AI: You need to gain an expertise of few Maths concepts such as linear algebra ( matrix Algebra is really important when you start working with the large amount of data), numerical optimization ( Convex Optimization, etc.), differential calculus ( ML is very much math heavy but you don’t need to be expert in all kinds of calculus but at least differential calculus is extremely important), and statistical analysis ( many people argue that ML is really just computer aided stats but I would at least suggest to have excellent understanding of basic stats). Deep command on Python, Java and C/C++. I would suggest to get more into Python if you haven’t cracked it yet……”R” is also getting lots of popularity in this space but still I would suggest for “Python” first. MatLab - I would also suggest Regression(linear and logistics).
  • Classification and segmentation using clustering and decision tree 6. Time series (advance topic) I would suggest to master these concepts...we have a plenty of free material on the internet.
  • You can effectively study ML in Python but there are so many resources for beginners using MatLab. After this basic stuff, master stuff HDFC, MapReduce, Yarn, Pig, Hive, HBase, Oozie, etc. Machine Learning = Maths+Stat+Data Structures & Algorithms + Programming Knowledge….!!!! After building your foundation, there are many other things that can excite you such as “Neural Networks”, Genetic Programming, Bioinformatics Algorithms, etc.
  • FYI, here is the list of very popular ML algorithms in the industry: C4.5 ( Decision Trees). Apriori PageRank k-Means ( Clustering). Naive Bayes. AdaBoost. Support Vector Machines ( SVM). Expectation Maximization ( EM). Classification and Regression Tree ( CART). k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN).
  • After you become familiar with the basic concepts and have a deep understanding on the above, I would suggest to deep dive into reading the journals/papers such as from Google DeepMind, etc.
